About Us

Eugene Chapter and Origin of the Kraut Pounder

The Kraut Pounder is a production of the Eugene Chapter, WESTON A. PRICE FOUNDATION®.  Located in the beautiful Willamette Valley, Oregon, the Eugene Chapter is composed of people who share a common interest in nutrient dense food and the nutritional principals of the Weston A. Price Foundation, as described in the Wise Traditions Journal, and the book Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig.

Please visit The WESTON A. PRICE FOUNDATION® for more information.

The Birth of the Kraut Pounder

The Eugene Chapter was founded in 1999.  In early 2007, at a potluck-meeting with the new volunteer chapter leaders, Lisa & Victoria, Victoria suggested that our chapter make and sell an item as a fund-raiser.  She brought in her grandmothers wooden sauerkraut-making tool and offered it as a model for our new creation.  Lisa took the original pounder, modified the design to fit into modern wide-mouth canning jars, created the krautpounder.com website and began making, selling and marketing the newly named, Kraut Pounder©.

The first tool specifically designed for fermentation:

At the time there were no other manufacturers making a tool such as this specifically designed to aid in fermentation. Sally Fallon, President of the Weston A. Price Foundation, supported our Chapter by buying a Kraut Pounder from the very first batch!  Our original goals were to be able to fund local activities without the chapter leaders expending any of their own money out of pocket, and for the chapter to be able to send at least one local volunteer to the Wise Traditions Conference each year.

The Kraut Pounder

The Kraut Pounder is hand-turned in small batches by a local craftsman, engraved, oiled, packed and shipped around the world, all from right here in Eugene, Oregon.  Kraut Pounder sales pay for all of the expenses involved with making, packing, and shipping the Kraut Pounders, also website expenses and a quarterly ad in the Wise Traditions Journal.  With the remaining proceeds, the Eugene Chapter has met the original goal of being able to fund local chapter activities and send one representative from Eugene to the national Wise Traditions Conference each year.  It has also purchased DVD recordings from the Conference to show to our local community.
