Kraut PounderThe Kraut Pounder is an original creation by the Eugene Chapter, WESTON A. PRICE FOUNDATION®.

We began fabricating them in 2007 as a fund-raiser for our local Chapter.  At that time there were no other tools of its kind specifically designed and marketed for fermentation (now there are several knock-offs – don’t be fooled, buy the original!).  They continue to be handcrafted in Eugene, Oregon.

Kraut Pounders are conveniently sized to fit into canning jars.  Each Kraut Pounder is turned from a solid piece of Maple.  This natural hardwood is a beautiful predominantly light-colored.  Each Kraut Pounder has unique markings, and as with all natural wood may have darker pigments or swirling figure through-out the wood.  They are finished with natural walnut oil.

Measuring 11 inches tall & 2-1/2 inches across the base, the large head fits into wide mouth canning jars, the handle may be reversed to fit into small mouth jars.

“Nana” Lena Hurr
circa 1915

The original Pounder we used as our inspiration was passed down to one of our Eugene Chapter members from her grandmother.

Nana used it during her long life, it was then passed onto me and is still going strong. Nana was a strong, self-reliant and industrious German woman who loved her garden, high fat foods and organ meats. Nana passed away one month shy of her 104th birthday.

Her life was a fine example of the Weston A. Price Foundation principles right down to the cod liver oil!”
